Rookesbury Park CC site, nr Fareham

No, signal at all for 3 broadband there (wouldn't even roam to Orange). I realise that when we post this, we are usually going by just the area of the site we were on. My mobile (on O2) wouldn't work from our pitch either ,but did by the toilet block.
Anyway, pitch 56 was no-go for the 3 broadband dongle, for those that take note of these things.

it works wherever I can get a signal.
er...just seen this: Isn't that stating the obvious? I mean...if you can't get a signal it won't work will it-not with "3" anyway.

BTW- rural South Devon (including Dartmouth)-no signal so it won't work ( ) Here near Bath quite good so reasonably fast.

Mobile Broadband

I have Vodafone mobile broadband for 15 pm and it works wherever I can get a signal. At 54Mbps it is fast enough to download everything I need. Very easy to use too!

Yes it is serious as much as it works for me at home where the signal is marginal.

But I am beginning to think that there are other factors which affect the connection that I get in different locations. for example last weekend we at the Brean rally ... the dongle connected OK and showed a reasonable signal but the data transfer was really slow and variable... I tried the colander and it raised the signal level to good but the download rate was still poor. So I am pretty sure that the contention ratio of the transmitter is coming into play.

If you are wondering what is "contention ratio" then it is sharing. The "contention ratio" is the number of other people you have to share the connection infrastructure with. In a wired connection a contention ratio of 50:1 would mean that the maximum number of people you could be sharing the connection with at anytime is 49 other people. If all 50 people were downloading at the same time then your download speed will be poor. Does this affect the mobile connections too? I am sure it must.

The trouble is that these dongles are getting more and more popular... so does that mean they will get slower and slower? Any one out there who knows the answer?

OldWomble Just used mine last week in Germany to download 12 emails - cost me 31:22 for the pleasure and thats on top of the 10 month charge. I think its yet another rip-off

peterandirene Just home from our trip to Scotland.

Worked in Morecambe, Moffatt, Edinburgh, Glasgow.

Didn't work in Braemar, Crail, St Andrews.

Might try the colander trick, are you sure this is serious?
