I looked at PVCs when I bought my last van, but mostly they had only 2 burners.

3 was my minimum - boiled egg, toast n kettle for tea...

eurajohn When you say the Hymer has no A/C do you mean cab air-con or roof air-con for the habitation area?

Personally I'd not entertain any van that doesn't have cab air-con, if you are planning to use anywhere in Europe in the Summer, especially an A class like the B544.

Pudsey_Bear John might be right re the 2.3Jtd, I only drove one once on a test drive, I took it up a quite steep hill and it felt up to it, but I didn't go for a long run in it so top gear wasn't tested, which brings us to the Achilles heel of that model, top (5th) gear can fail, it's not an expensive fix, and can be avoided with good maintenance, they run fine in 4th by the way, 5th is pretty much an overdrive in reality, best to stay out of it below 50mph ish.

wfdTamar Ah, interesting re the engine. I'm not familiar with these, so thanks. I don't plan on tearing about the place so I still think it'd be fine? My primary concern is fuel economy and engine longevity. Can't see myself going over 90kmph much.

oh yes saw the air con and it's a good addition if you're planning summer in the south. I'm Australian but over heat. However, I don't really want to be cooped up inside with the AC on much. I'd rather use passive cooling, so I wondered if the smaller interior volume over say a Hymer would feel stuffier, particularly if you're sitting in the rear lounge which looks in the photo's quite enclosed (I realise the windows open of course).

Also wether you have to do a sideways shuffle around the bathroom to get from one end to the other - and does the bulk of that room fill the centre of the van.

Saw a Dethleffs Globus i3 that was a lot more expensive but looked great until I saw a not very tall man review it on Youtube and he had to open the bathroom vent to stand upright in the shower!

Currently talking to someone near Brighton that has a Hymer B544 who might be ok with selling to me at a distance. No AC, oven or 4 burner stove though (who actually needs 4 burners?).

eurajohn Ref your comment about interior in warmer climes, did you notice the IH has a roof mounted air con unit? to use it you would of course need electrical hook up.

Also not so sure about the adverts comments ref the 2.3 engine being desirable, if it were the post 2006 130 multi jet I'd agree but being the earlier 110 hp version not so sure, for that era of van the 2.8 is far more desirable.

Pudsey_Bear First one is the best of those two, watch out for body rust as welding a van full of inflammable furniture and wiring etc is not for the faint-hearted, second one is too old, spares a problem.

Stick with the Fiat 2.3 or 2.8 Jtds for a decent engine, they're pretty bulletproof, not much to choose between them for power, 2.8Jtd is more common, so look at post 2000 vans.

Good deal?

Hi. Old thread, but can't hurt to ask. Looking for something to spend quite a few months at a time in over summer in France (mostly). I'm single. Found a 2004 IH Savannah Tio R. 70k miles, 2.3 litre LHD (which I prefer). Bike rack, Air Con, awning. 4 burner stove, oven. 2 small TV's. Good condition. Seems a little expensive (£18,450), but I suppose that's dealer prices.

It has the rear U lounge/bed, mid kitchen & bathroom. I find the interior a bit on the gaudy side (the timberwork) and from the pics seems a bit cramped. As I'll be using it in warmer weather I do wonder if the interior will work in that climate. Would that be 6.4 metres long? Drivers vision to the rear out the right side looks a bit restricted due to smallish windows.

I have seen a similar layout 1994 Rapido 710f for a lot less money (£7,495). 81,500 miles. It looks ok, just a little dated looking. Also considering Hymer's, more space, but bulkier. I don't really have a set budget, just want to pay the right price.

I'm looking from a distance (Tasmania) so need to do most on the internet.
