Penquin Insurance companies now have the reputation and it has been upheld by the ombudsman that all facts have to be declared - it used to be RELEVANT facts but that word is now omitted as they have managed to weasel out of claims where something completely unrelated to the claim has not been declared.

This has been reported n motor claims house claims health insurance claims and property loss - they have you by the short and curlies.

So it is not a matter of telling lies - hat could be a criminal problem but one of failing o disclose facts which they use to negate your claim.

e.g. on a travel insurance claim for loss of luggage in transit a friend had their claim disallowed simply because they had not disclosed a health problem to the travel insurance - even though they were covered for health problems on another policy where everything had been declared and recorded well in advance but because they did not declare to the property insurer that one of the party had a pacemaker their entire claim was disallowed and that was upheld by the ombudsman.....

Basically you have to declare EVERYTHING and they simply tell you "not relevant" but it is still on the recording of the conversation..... They will find ANY loophole possible to reduce claims quite legally.

So it is not a case of telling lies but of failing to tell.

Pudsey_Bear In theory, the refillable should be safer if properly fitted, this because you never have to disturb the vans piping when dragging a Calor bottle out, all the work is done outside of the van, only real problem is if you fail to disconnect after filling, but even then it will be limited to ripping out the vans filler point as there is a failsafe link to the pump.

I never intimated it would increase a premium I only suggested in the event of a claim related to a change made that they were not aware of, could affect the validity of the claim.

At the end of the day you pay your money and take your chances, I just like to minimise the risk as far as possible.

Ah, I see what you mean Terry, I actually said I don't volunteer information, not that I don't tell them if asked, once I found that they are not bothered about the hab area, (after informing them of the gasit fit) I don't tell them when asked about upgrades as I already know this isn't what they want to know.

However if I was to fit loads of gear which might affect the value of the van I would be a bit daft not to make sure it was all covered, but I haven't had to fit anything more than solar or gasit, which are quite low value, and they might charge more for the relative extra cover that isn't reasonable to my mind, so I take the risk of loss or damage myself for those extras.

barryd Just to let you know that AIB are trying to respond on here to this query but they have been unable to register on this forum and are awaiting an activation email which has not arrived (Surprise surprise). I am in touch with them via email and there clearly is some confusion so I suspect it will be cleared up sometime today.
