I will after we've used it again, let it dry out a bit in case the potent mixture got into the plastic bits.

Pudsey_Bear I think I'd call this a 99% success, thanks to Gaspode.

See new pictures in link below and compare them with the earlier ones, took about an hour altogether, there a bit left on top of the mech, but it's not causing any problems, so It'll stay put until if and when it needs to be re-done.

Pudsey_Bear I came to the same conclusion, I tipped it down the manhole on our drive as it had stopped fizzing, and put one cup in, so effectively half as strong, put my timer on and going to look in half an hour.

gaspode Hi Kev

Been out this morning so only just seen your posts Kev.

I told you it'd work didn't I?

Sounds as if you might have the acid a bit on the strong side, just have it strong enough to do the job, experimentation is the key. You'll probably find that the last stubborn remnants take quite a long soak to remove. Next time you'll only need a much weaker solution once the years of neglect have been cleared.

Pudsey_Bear Looks OK I think

Pudsey_Bear Wow, I must have put too much in, I just had a peak inside and all the grot off the bottom is in solution now, I've tipped it up so the emptying spout is facing down I'll leave it like that for a bit then tip it the other way for a while, and then later today I'll empty it out.

Would it be okay to put it down the drain if I put plenty of water down too?

Pudsey_Bear I must be in impatient mode today, I half filled the cassette with warm water and goggles and respirator on, I popped in two mugs of the acid, I got a whiff of the fumes as I shook it as it's pressurising the cassette, I'd not want a whiff from the neat container stuff, Respirator back on and I looked in the tank, it certain looks to be doing something, and with 5 litres, I reckon it'll last a few years, as it won't need anything like as much for a cleaner tank.

Before doing the task I had a Google for what it can do and came across this youtube video of a "person" pouring different acids onto his hand, and it's effect.
saves me the bother I suppose

I always buy a litre of hydrachloric acid (23%) when in France, they sell it in most supermarkets for less than €2 and it's the bees knees for the job. I dilute half a bottle into about ten litres of warm water, swill it around, turn over regularly and leave it in there for at least 24hrs. It's never damaged any seals or working bits yet and I've been using the method more than ten years.

PS: I don't have a SOG but my own fan ventilation conversion of the Thetford cassette works like magic for keeping odours out of the washroom.
I got my acid yesterday, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1917971446...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT so ready to give it a go, but the dilution is different to the one you used, and bearing in mind how bad mine is inside, what would you suggest with this 36% strength? as you just say above half a bottle I don't want to assume it's volume.

I'm still impressed with the SOG, it still smelled of vinegar when I put the cassette back in, but not a whiff from inside the van.
