I want to re-cover the handle just inside the habitation door because it looks a bit ruff.
At the back of the handle is this screw or whatever it is, anyone know how to undo it? It doesn't look like and Allen key, in the mitts it just looks like a round hole.
Can you access behind the wall board that the handle is screwed to. There are usually 1 or 2 screws at each end of the handle screwed through from the back side of the wall board. This would allow you to remove the whole handle.
Torx screws look a lot like Allen keys, but they have odd bits sticking out, they come in assorted sizes and cannot be undone using a normal screw end, a cross head or an Allen Key.
If all else fails have a look at an assorted set of torx heads etc. Amazon has them from around £8 but cheap ones tend not to be very strong and often fail when needed.
My thoughts on that are based on enlarging the head to the maximum possible - it MIGHT be showing the edges inside BUT it is not clear.......
The leather arrived Yesterday, unfortunately I think it is about 1/4 of an inch too narrow to wrap around the handle.
I am reluctant to take the old cover off in case I can´t stretch the new enough to overlap the sides and if I can´t do it I´m wassanamed. :frown2:
I had a message out of the blue from somewhere and it said "Take the backing off and I bet it stretches0" so I did and it does so I will have a go tomorrow.
Glue residue is tricky. Try petrol, alcohol or white spirit. Sometimes heat will help or just using your thumbs to roll it off. There are proprietary brands like sticky stuff remover. I haven't found one of those that works.
So into the workshop with mask and mix all these things together eh! no I joke, I will try what I have, there´s quite a variety in there.
I will report back.
Not so much fun though  I need a few challenges to keep my brain and body going.
If it doesn't work I´ll have to go down your road, Mmm maybe I will next year:grin2:
That didn´t take long, rubber glove, acetone and a pair of antique cotton Y front did the trick.
Now to re-cover after I have recovered. Coffee first me thinks.
:blob7:
To me this is a lot more satisfying than paying 30/-
There´s enough leather left for 2 more covers, but as its taken 6 years for it to need recovering I think it will not be me that has to do it next time.
Ha ha ha, you would be surprised what I can find when I need a replacement Jan. I live in the 50s economy.
And my wife is tenacious like you at some creations.
