Exhaust Downpipe extension

Just spent 2 part days removing Tar deposits from the back of the motorhome. It had been there probably 6 months (when weather was cold), took hell of a lot of cleaning.

Anyway to my point.
Bought some Tar remover from a garage & the owner was saying that the said 'Tar' may have come from the exhaust & vortexed around the back of the vehicle?
His solution was to put an end downpipe facing the road to avoid this.

Could this be true that it came from the exhaust or that an extention on the exhaust would help?

Confused. Comments appreciated.

If you are chucking oil/carbon out of the exhaust, it could be expensive.

Diesels have an issue with running on light loads at less than optimum temperatures, it is called 'bore glazing'.

It affects most diesels that spend a lot of time idling or doing a lot of stop-start trips.

Best cure is a decent run out to get the engine up to full working temperature and the bores and rings cleaned up.

Having said that, I've never seen a road diesel chuck out anything 'tar' like, it is usually oil smuts that can be wiped off easily.

Tar comes from the road, nowhere else.

I fitted a deflector on the end of my exhaust pipe but that was only because I converted it to the standard RH drive exhaust. It is close to the hab door and I was worried about fumes getting into the van.

Is your exhaust tailpipe under the van? I would have thought it came out of the side by a few inches. I just bought a cheap deflector to try it and it worked. One of these days I will have to get a shiny one. :D
