TV whilst abroad via Internet ??

Perennial question I know but can anyone advise me how I can get UK Tv whilst abroad? We are renting an apartment in the Costa Del Sol for March so would like, if possible, to be able to catch a bit of TV. We will have a laptop along with reasonable Wifi so it will obviously need to be done via the internet. I have a Humax box that is loaded up with all sorts of films etc but access to live News etc can be handy.

I was thinking in terms of Tvcatchup.com along with tvplayer.com but I am unsure if they will work outside the UK? I dont want Sky (stopped paying Murdoch years ago) Will I need a VPN? if so how do I go about getting one?

Thanks

Andy

Andy I use a free VPN Zenmate, I had a problem with it yesterday, but having not changed any settings, it worked fine just now, it does throw up a few new tabs so just shut them down straight away.

Can you explain VPN and how I get it? I know it’s a software instal on my laptop and it “hides” the fact that you are outside the UK but other than that I am ig-or-ant

Andy

Someone has just pointed me towards “Showbox” apparently it’s like Kodi but without the “issues”

VPN = Virtual Private Network, right you now know as much as me

Google and YouTube may illuminate you better than I ever could.

A VPN is a system that makes it appear as if you are somewhere you are not by giving the source of your ip code (your computer's personal address) as in a location that will not be blocked.

To use BBC iPlayer you have to be located within the UK - if I try and access it direct from here it comes up with "That service is not available in your location" which not only stops TV programmes and radio programmes but also things that I use like BBC Bitesize - a learning package that children find great for learning science (I am doing some remedial science teaching here). If I try to listen to "Desert Island Discs" get the speech bits but no music or just a very short snippet "due to copyright issues" - similar problem as iPlayer - they know where I am.... and that is not in the UK...

If I install a VPN it makes it appear as if my computer is based somewhere in the UK by chnging the route that the signal takes to get to me. Thus the BBC should not be ale to say "Uh Uh you're not in the UK so NO WAY Hose" (other names are available).

There are many such servces available - some free others you have to pay for but they should all work....

Only they don't as the BBC is blocking such routes as fast as they can - we used to use "FilmOn" as the route to watch live BBC/ITV as it used a UK based VPN = that no longer works. Some virus checkers also can include a VPN if you pay for it (AVG for instance). Hola! used to work but also used to spanner computers.

So it is an ever-changing battle-field with those wanting to be able to e.g. watch TV as if in the UK (or e.g. watch US TV as if in the USA or any other country's service from another place) trying new methods while the broadcasters do their best to stop it.......

I hope that helps......

You also need a good internet service as if it is too slow (bandwidth) the it cannot cope with live streaming or such things as iPlayer......... But that's another ball game.....

I have tried Iplayer on the PC and it's not too bad but via the Virgin Tivo box it is truly awful, it takes over 2 minutes to get any programme open, and controlling it is a no no altogether.

I use www.tunnelbear.com but it's limited to not much data.

Whose wifi will you be trying this on, and do they know how much bandwidth you might be using?

I used TunnelBear when in Spain for 4 months, the site had pretty good bandwidth so it worked well. They do a deal £8 per month for unlimited data or £4 a month if you sign up for a year.
