Certainly in France and Spain there are free to air channels and then pay to view channels.
Actually when Digital terrestrial TV started in the UK under the banner of On digital there were pay to view channels in addition to the then available free channels. So no difference really
... I have been baffled this year, not being in Europe last year, to find in France, well Corsica, I got five strong stations with no vision and a message which said something like "Freeview not supported". In Italy, well Sardinia, I can see a number of stations okay with sound and vision. .
Had no more problems in Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, Austria or Germany and the UK so the Sardinian experience remains a mystery.
I have bought a flash new Carthago and wonder what the current best buy is for terrestial tv aerials. I would go for the latest Status if there is no other advice but we don't seem to have a cupboard or wardrobe to accomodate the pole. Any suggestions most welcome.

All our 'modern' flat screen TVs here in Normandy readily tune in the UK Freeview and the French TNT equivalent stations.
As and when we travel outside the Sky 'footprint' we use a digital 'set top box' to bring in any local channels.
