Computer experts please help

Well, I shouldn't have got so cocky about getting Autoroute to work on my laptop!

I have an external HD which I think holds some backup files BUT when I double-click to open it is showing "This folder is empty". However Properties show there's 102MB of used space.

I checked that hidden files were viewable

Having googled, I used the command prompt:
C:\Windows\System32>attrib -h -r -s /s /d d:\*.* which gave the result:
Access denied - D:\System Volume Information

However when I refreshed the ext drive folder I now see a file .dropbox.device and when I selected that another folder $RECYCLE.BIN appeared so presumably the entire drive isn't locking me out.

I've allowed Users full access to the drive.

I then tried CHKDSK /F and got the following:
C:\Windows\System32>CHKDSK d: /F
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Volume label is A-DATA SH93.

Stage 1: Examining basic file system structure ...
256 file records processed.
File verification completed.
0 large file records processed.
0 bad file records processed.

Stage 2: Examining file name linkage ...
1 reparse records processed.
282 index entries processed.
Index verification completed.
0 unindexed files scanned.
0 unindexed files recovered to lost and found.
1 reparse records processed.

Stage 3: Examining security descriptors ...
Security descriptor verification completed.
13 data files processed.

Windows has scanned the file system and found no problems.
No further action is required.

312568640 KB total disk space.
25488 KB in 10 files.
76 KB in 15 indexes.
0 KB in bad sectors.
75740 KB in use by the system.
65536 KB occupied by the log file.
312467336 KB available on disk.

4096 bytes in each allocation unit.
78142160 total allocation units on disk.
78116834 allocation units available on disk.

C:\Windows\System32>

So, 25MB in files and 65MB for the log file (??)

But still only the .dropbox.device file showing.

Any ideas?

Update: I used the HD on a different laptop so no electrical problem. Then I saved a doc to the HD and I could see that.

So I think I must have wiped the external HD at some stage n have completely forgotten.

Is it possible that the number of files CMD said there were, are all hidden system files?

Wish I knew enough to be able to help Jean. Then I might be able to solve some of my own tech problems.

Well if you go into Control Panel, then Folder Options, you can View, then allow yourself to see absolutely everything by unclicking the ticks.
Ignore the warnings.
On the other hand, if your backups were done by a program for itself, then only that program might have access.

Like Ray, my skill level is limited to turning the b****y thing on, if it does not do what I expect I turn it off again - always a good ploy.

My only thought from dim and distant memories is that when a disc is wiped, it is not actually cleaned and virtually nothing is removed, all that happens is that the link to access it is wiped so the file cannot be opened by mere mortals.

I THINK that is why and how forensic examination by eg the Police, can find files that the owner thinks have been wiped such as naughty, illegal, images....... From reading fiction by authors that I trust, they seem to suggest that in order to completely wipe something requires special programs, or physically destroying the disc.....

Not that either of those thoughts help you make progress, but it will raise the profile of the thread and someone who actually knows ANYTHING may come along and help.....

Barry ? Where are you ?

Ah Ray, I knew you'd be sympathetic!

Bill, I'll have a look at Control Panel when I get home - I did the view thing from the folder itself but CP might give me more options.

His internet connection might be down. After all he only used a cullender to piggyback onto someone else's connection.
Michelle might be straining the peas.

If there is only 25mb of files on there then its clear there is no back up on it. the .dropbox device thing is I think something drop box creates when you transfer files or photos but I dont use Dropbox. Never liked it. Anyway its maybe a red herring.

You could try the Treesize app to see whats on the drive. https://www.jam-software.com/treesize_free

Its quite a useful app for seeing what files are where. Best to run it as administrator but to be honest it looks like there is nothing of value on this drive. If you have all your files safe somewhere else I would just format it and start again.

Thanks for that Barry, I'll give it a go. Do I right-click on the exe file to run as admin, or install as admin (if so how?) I SHOULD be admin on my laptop but something happened that I thought, maybe not. It was 2nd-hand.

If there are files you have wiped and you want to see what they are or even recover them use a free programme called Recuva, https://www.ccleaner.com/recuva
