Help needed with Windows 7 and Microsoft

Both my and MrsW's laptops have suddenly started claiming that they may not be genuine copies of Windows 7, which they certainly are....

It now will only allow us to use Microsoft as our Home Page, and I am getting a really annoying page coming up every time labelled HDClump or similar......

Does anyone have any clue how we can sort these problems ? Change antivirus ? Emigrate ? Vote Lib Dem ?

We are both lost as to how to remove these annoying and unwarranted intrusions...

HELP !

Apart from my F-Secure security suite I use the following for casual checks.
The Major Geeks links are always safe.

https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download/thankyou/

https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/det...aner_beta.html

The first link is a full free programme then after a period it will ask you to pay but you continue with the free version.

Both are good useful scans.

Ted.

I would try a run through with Malwarebytes first as recommended. Never heard of HDClump. I think Mrs D had a similar issue with her W7 laptop but I Cant remember how I resolved it. I think I just activated it again using the product ID on the back of her laptop. There are several reasons why this can happen and malware is one of them so rule that out first.

I wonder if your browser has been hijacked Dave? I presume it's the browser's home page that you are referring to? Which browser is it? Have you tried using a different one to see if the same thing happens?

Yes Peter, we have tried IE (yuk) and Firefox, all seem to be playing up hence why I feel it is deeper than just the browser and may be in the OS I am currently removing malware as a first step, it has found 9 issues which does not reflect well on AVG as a protector....

Not necessarily Dave. If they are just PUPs (Potentially unwanted programs) they are not necessarily viruses so AVG wont necessarily pick them up. Ive seen well over 1000 picked up by malwarebytes on computers that have AVG or Avast etc on them by Malwarebytes. They PC is usually in a bad state by then if it has that many. Seven is nothing unless one or more of them is something serious.

Just to rule in or out the possibility that it is a licence issue, were the two PC's bought at the same time?

As an aside in case you did not know MS are discontinuing suppurt for W7 in Jan 2020. I wasn't too happy with AVG and have recently switched nearly all my devices over to F-Secure.

FWIW...Have used F-Secure security suite for many years and never had any problems.
I pay £49.99 for 2 years and 3 PCs but this takes a phone call and a haggle every time!
Could always go free but don't begrudge the reasonable cost I pay.
