Home automation.

Am I missing something here. I keep reading about all the home electric items you can turn on or adjust remotely using a smart phone.
Like turning the heating on before you actually get home. Most of these benefits to 'life' costing between £50 to £150 plus the apps.
You can basically turn anything on in the house and the latest one is a kettle controlled by either Alexa, Siri or the phone.

This is the bit I don't really get. At some point you still have to get up and fill the kettle and after it's boiled manually make the hot drink.

Whats the point.?

Ray.

People love gadgets Ray. I have a client thats into all that. Has a stunning place up in Teesdale but he controls it all from anywhere in the world, usually London. Central heating which is controlled in several separate buildings over wifi, CCTV everywhere, even in the trees, all accessed on a iPad from anywhere in the world. Cant say it interests me but this kind of thing pays well.

I think its all part of this 'must have it' culture that we seem to have developed. This insatiable desire for 'stuff' is basically what is fuelling the (limited) economic growth we are seeing in this country and imho it will come crashing down like a house of cards soon and we will drift back into recession.

I have a step son who complains that he can't get on the property ladder at the age of 28, yet he and his partner earn around £65k a year between them. As I pointed out to him having 3 foreign holidays a year; £40-50 per month smart phones each; Sky TV package; dining out/takeaways on a very regular basis; spending 5.5k on a 9 year old car; going to the pub frequently etc etc is NOT the way to save for a deposit!

This on top of a 40k inheritance he had when he was 21 which he basically pissed up against a wall!

There is too much concern with 'stuff' and having it imho.

Talking of kettles though I was gutted a couple of months ago and ours broke and Mrs GMJ insisted that we had to have one which matched the colour of the kitchen! What's that all about??! I though white or chrome went with anything...but apparently not

Ab so bluddy lootly Graham.
The must have now younger generation where the word 'save' just doesn't compute.
You can see all those lining up to access the 'Food Banks' all have smart phones in their hands. Although in todays world they are being made more indispensable for basic function.

Great for you Barry but imho a total 5 min wonder.
We have €3 timers on anything we need to 'control' and have had sets of €10 remotes to operate several plugs and appliances for 20 years. This type of thing................

We can sit and turn on anything we desire including the outside fountain from the comfort of our settee. But the kettle still needs filling and pouring.???

Just start clearing out the house, then you find out how much irrelevant stuff you've (I've) spent money on and I don't consider myself much of a must-have kind of person. (Not totally parsimonious though, but I won't spend money on the latest gimmicks, well certainly not the expensive kind.) Although I must confess to having 3 types of garlic crusher, none of which do the tedious smelly job I was hoping to avoid.

Because my friend bought herself a new one and thought I would like her old one
I have just switched it on after umpteen weeks its been off, battery is full (I bought a new one because she said it needed it) blinking thing keeps making a ping ping ping noise and I don't know why, there are 3 ! in triangles and one in a circle at the top and I have no idea what they mean.
I thought I would put the maps.me on there and can´t work out how to do it even though I have put other things on there like my email. I have wasted hours fiddling with the damn thing and get no where.

I'm no expert on so called smart phones unlike Kev. He seems to have had many and triumphed over them all.
When you power up the phone, does it have a current SIM in it to enable calls?
Can you 'swipe' upwards to see what those '!' are.?
