11.6" will be too small and won't have a full sized keyboard.
Ideally she wants a 13" Laptop.
Disc driver will only make it thicker and how often (a week?) does she need to use a CD. An external CDRW drive, powered from the USB socket (no external power required) will only cost £30.
I'm assuming based on the 11.6" HP that your budget is circa £350.
one of the most important points is the hours the battery will last for.I went for a 10 inch Asus EeePC plus Samsung a usb dvd player/writer SE-5084.which still played my CD as i turned it over to read the model number.
I get between 6 to 9 hours before recharging.also has a usb 3 socket.
cost me £260 with extra memory, plus £30 for usb dvd .
plus a couple of 32Gb USB sticks @ £25 each should be all she needs.
yes I get your point, however how many of them will you have to write each semester. As said the battery life is a major factor.a 10 inch is easy to handle cheap as well.even fits into some coat pockets out of the rain and less chance of leaving it somewhere, like our civil servants and their masters.
