2004 Autotrail Tracker step fault?

Hi all,
as a newbie on here, I thought some of you may have experience of our problem and be able to suggest a quick fix. Our “new to us” 2004 Autotrail Tracker EKS, has an electric in/out step fitted, controlled by a switch just inside the door on the left hand side. This switch works perfectly at bringing the step out and then putting the step back in. However, we were led to believe the step should also be controlled by the ignition, if the step is left out. Switching on the ignition should activate a buzzer and the step should be automatically retracted apparently, this does not happen on our van!! Any help or advice greatly appreciated, however, we are on site with limited knowledge and even more limited tools.

My 2002 Tracker CKE (same FIAT base as yours) didn't have an automatic retract....it did have a very loud siren sound if the engine started with the step out....you then quickly take off your seat belt and rush to the door to press the button and retract it

PS. There was a body update for the 2004 model so my comments might be rubbish

Some do auto retract on the ignition on position of the key, some sound a buzzer but a few rely on either hitting something or your memory, I had one which did nothing so I had a bit of cardboard with step out written on it to leave on the dash, it never let me down.

Ours is a different motorhome but a similar problem. Not automatic but a buzzer sounds when the step is left out. Problem is so much c**p collects under and near the step that the cable to the step warning module attached to the step gets corroded. A simple clean and lots of gaffer tape re-connects the circuit. This may be the answer.
