A true 'legend' of the entertainment business. We went to see him at the Bournemouth International Centre about 20 years ago. He obviously knew the area well because at about 10 o clock, and only just warming up, he asked if there was anyone in from the Isle of Wight? A few cheers, including ours, got the response, "well I hope you've booked a hotel because the last ferry leaves in about 20 minutes". Needless to say we hadn't booked a hotel so when the show finally finished at about ten to midnight we knew we would have to sit and wait at the ferry terminal until the first ferry the next morning. Nobody had warned us that his shows were legendary for their length!!!!!

RIP Doddy......

Yes, I only went to see him once. Dragged along reluctantly and I think it was midnight by the time we got "let out". I remember being disappointed as all the pubs had shut.

I lovely bloke though, funny and came across as a genuinely nice man who just wanted to make people laugh and carry on working which he did right to the end. Finally recognised with a knighthood just last year I think.

I used to love the Diddy Men as a kid.

Ken married his long term partner Anne Jones only two days before he died.

I saw him live on stage in Sheffield a couple of times and luckily we had our car to get us home - all buses had long since ceased running those nights before we were let out of the theatre.

And you needed a strong bladder to watch his shows or you, quite literally, got the p*ss taken out of you if you ventured off to the toilets.

We were fortunate to have him as a guest in our home many years ago and he was a true Gentleman and will be sorely missed. Even when he wasn't in the spotlight he was just the same down to earth character.

We where warned! When booking to see him at the Woodville.Hall, Gravesend the lady on the other end of the phone told us quite seriously to bring seat cushions. When asked why she said "Because our seats are too hard for the time you will be sitting on them." How true.

A very sad loss.
