Advice from the engineers out there please

I have a new phone, the back of which is made of plastic unlike the old phone which was aluminium I think (metal of some description anyway).

I carry my phone in my back pocket and am concerned that the wallet case with a flexible rear holder won't give the phone the protection it needs. I'd like to slip in a thin sheet of strong material between the phone and the case that will give it rigidity.

Any suggestions? (apart from 'don't carry it in your rear pocket'!)

Might cut down the signal. Personally I'm never happy about the phone in my back pocket Jean. I inevitably sit on it.

A somewhat delicate query, is the phone to be protected on both sides ?

An uneven surface to be sat on and/or a derrière ?

I’ll just get my coat now!

The problem with any thin material flat sheet is that it will not have much resistance to being bent, the only way resistance to bending is achieved is by using angles or radius corners and then of course how much resistance will be is determined by the actual thickness and shape.
The most resistant will be carbon fibre, but even with that you'd be limited in how resistant it was by its design and thickness.

Just a thought but on the majority of trousers or jeans the rear pockets are actually higher than the seating area, so the amount of bending moment will not be so severe as perhaps you imagine.
Most likely more of a squash than bend.

Sorry but that doesn't help with your question, perhaps invest in a high end phone made from materials more resistant.

I can't stand carrying my phone in my hand as a fashion statement. I dislike carrying anything when out and about. My wallet and credit cards are usually in a rear pocket and end up like bananas. So generally I prefer my phone either in a shirt pocket or coat top pocket. Other than that I tend to leave the bluddy thing in the car.

My problem is that, very often - and especially in summer - my rear pocket is the only place I've got (front pocket being even more problematic.)

I was looking at carrying pouches but I don't often wear a belt; those with carabinieres have very poor quality loops holding them (according to the reviews) and ones round the neck will bounce n annoy.... unless anyone knows differently.

I do often use a small rucksack when out but those for attaching to the strap looked cumbersome n not very secure. Like Ray, I like my hands free.

I got used to carrying a small Casio digital camera in a pouch on my belt for many years. But I almost always do wear a belt. Yes Jean the 'pouches' for smart phones are rarely satisfactory and secure. Prue's handbag she made out of an old pair of jeans and of course has outside pockets on it. Looks good.
