How do I update a Sky Minibox

Hi All you wizz kids,

I have a Sky Minibox (Pace) and I decided to blow caution to the wind and fork out for a 20 sky freeview card so we could watch channel 4 and 5. Card arrived from Sky with the instructions to call them to activate the card. Simple enough so I call Sky and a very helpful young lady asked me for the type/serial number etc. and declared that I needed a software update before the card could be activated. She asked me to switch off then holding down the back button power on and look for the four lights to flash. Nothing. So she then says that my Pace box is wired incorrectly and get an engineer to fix this before they can download the update and activate the card. Well I look at the back of the box and there doesn't appear to be anything that could be wrong. So guys any ideas on how I can download this update? The box is approx 18 months old and is working fine other than not picking up Channels 4 and 5.

How long did you hold the button in?

Here is the procedure:

Hi Dave,

I guess I only held the button down for a few seconds - maybe 5 or 6. The Sky helpdesk didn't mention holding it down 15 or more seconds. I will try it again as soon as I can. The MH is parked in our drive and we have trees all around and can't get the dish to lock on to a satellite. We are off out next weekend so will try it then

Thanks for the info

Pete

Have you got sky in the house? You could always connect it to that.

Hi Pete4x4,

No we don't - we use freeview instead. I'll try it out again at the weekend and hold it down longer next time

This seemsto happen when you do not use the box for several weeks.
If you leave it switched on when it is locked on to the satellite it will regain the channels 4 and 5. It can take up to 12 hours before it updates, but know need to phone Sky.

You don't need to match a Sky freeview card to a receiver. Just plug it in and leave switched on overnight.

EDIT:

Just thinking about it, you don't need the freeview card anymore either now that Freesat is in operation. You should be able to get the channels with no card inserted (may have to tune them manually though).

Help someone out when they're in trouble and they'll remember you when they're in trouble again.

Thanks for that gaspode,

I don't suppose you know the channel details for updating the box?

Err......... no I don't.

I haven't really got around to the details of the Freesat thingie yet, maybe I should. The problem is that I'm more than happy if I can get the BBC set of channels and Sky News, quite enough for me to keep up with affairs whilst away from home so I've no real incentive to mess about trying to get things like C4 and 5.

Perhaps I'm being simplistic but have you tried simply removing the card from the digibox and seeing what channels you get? AFAIK ITV1 and C4/5 should now be unencrypted and viewable without a card as Freesat channels.

I just know someone is going to tell me I'm wrong here.

Hi gaspode,

I'll certainly try. They weren't available last week but then I've never tried to add channels or update the box. We have been content for the past couple of years and it all started because there was a program on C4 that we wanted to watch but couldn't. I thought that for 20 I would ensure it didn't happen again. I should have kept reading my book.....

If Sky add a channel to their list does it automatically get displayed on the EPG? Maybe we are missing out on dozens of channels.....
