3 dongle - wher have you used yours?

Now used it in two locations with great success. Shrewsbury (at home) and Greenhills Caravan Park, Bakewell (there now).

Works well at both locations.

Excellent performance in Glen Nevis (Fort William). But only 2G at Onich (nr Glencoe) and Luss (Loch Lomond) and unable to access web pages.

Rocles 04-04-2008 18:20

Full speed in Blackpool, Lytham, Nelson, and York....only place it struggled was Cornwall, where coverage is set to increase very soon. Fab piece of kit.

mickyc 04-04-2008 19:12

Anyone know if the costs of using in France have come down yet?

zulurita 04-04-2008 19:46

Have used it at Minehead, Taunton, Wellington in Somerset.

Worked at Chapel Lane CC site.

Now at Cherstey C&CC site Surry and using it to post this.

Wish it had reduced for France :( as we are off to France tomorrow.

Westbay 05-04-2008 09:04

This mobile internet stuff is a bit new to me. I've looked on the 3 website and can't quite make out the cost of using the thing in the UK. Am I right in thinking you 1st buy a 'phone top-up for say 25 then an add-on for a tenner? When you use it, I can't see the rate at which the 'phone bit gets used. Or am I missing the point completely?

Hovis 05-04-2008 09:16

I give up - what Dongle are you referring to ?

Hovis

gm6vxb 05-04-2008 09:20

No coverage on the Shetland Islands, 2G only.
Fair coverage from Fraserburgh to Inverness, a few holes in coverage though around Cullen.
Only 2G at the C&CC site at Speyside, same pitch dependant at Nairn.
Suspect poor or no coverage on the West coast of Scotland north of Ullapool but will report back on this in a couple of weeks.
Martin.

Dongle is the name they use for the modem you plug in.

Telbell 05-04-2008 10:22

B...y Hell! Had to pay fifty quid for mine from Cphone Warehouse for a two year contract. Now it's free!!

Best value on the market...and (probably) best coverage

StAubyns 06-04-2008 19:05

First time I have used mine away.

Sat at Warwick Racecourse CC site and its working fine

peterandirene 07-04-2008 19:29

Now in Morecambe, works fine.

beagle 07-04-2008 21:04

It's great. And for anyone not used to broadband - it's not techy, just plug it in to your USB and it will install itself and off you go! It's 15 a month, the equipment (dongle) is free, and you can download p to 3GB a month which is fine if you don't want to stream videos etc. You have to sign up for 2 years.

The only word of warning I've heard is to be careful you don't go over the download limit, cos it's expensive if you do. The software tells you how much you've downloaded however MoneySavingExpert site says it's good to get a separate, more accurate, program to keep an eye on how much you download.

camoyboy 07-04-2008 23:21

Don't expect too much if you come to Norfolk. I bought one last week on the 10 for 18 months deal, and wasn't sure if it was working. Had to go into Norwich to check it out and worked fine there. Out in the sticks there are not too many G's about, but it did manage to download 12 emails in 23 minutes on Sunday!!

StAubyns 17-04-2008 20:37

No signal at Moreton in Marsh CC or Old Oaks at Glastonbury - not true it was showing 3(R), must be equivalent of dial up , but it would not show a page before I got fed up of waiting

At Pembrey CC it was HSDP at 3.2mbps one day and 3.6 the next :D

Three mobile

Hi

My pal took a THREE contract out earlier in the week and said the speed was fabulous at his home near Harrogate. He has used it a his mate's house near Wetherby - and nothing. Also tried at Boroughbridge - and still nothing.

It seems - and I hope I could be wrong - that when the THREE dongle works - it works well. When not in a 3G area or what ever it is called, it seems to perform worse than T mobile - certainly was the case at Boroughbridge when I had a THREE dongle.

Anyway, the half price offer is still on for existing THREE customers, so I think I will take one on regardless - even if for use only in Italy etc. I can keep my T mobile PAYG as a back up.

Russell

Has anyone had success with the THREE dongle when not in a Turbo area etc?

Hi Russell that is why I decided in the end to plump for the vodaphone one as I have had no trouble with vodaphone in the past, I know Sonesta has commented that at times that the 3 works whilst in other areas it doesn't..........I know her advice is usually good  CLICK HERE

Did you ever get your doo daa

billym 18-04-2008 20:46

Ours did not work in Holmfirth West Yorks last week. No signal.

It didn't work in Kitzbuhel either.

Vodaphone Dongle

Hi. I am at present in the middle of the Peterborough Showground using the Vodaphone dongle and it has the blue light showing which I believe its on the 3g network. It was up and running within a couple of minutes and the speed ain't too bad. I have been able to get a signal when visiting Garstang in Lancs. Giggleswick in North Yorks and also when MHF was at Greengrass Park I had a good signal there. Have been well pleased so far and at 15 a month can't knock it too bad.

Carolhymer 26-04-2008 23:00

Hi, at the moment we are touring the West Coast of Scotland, and up to now useing my 3 dongle have been on line at Newton Stewart (the large free car park next to the river). CCC at Culzean near Maidens and now I am on it on the CC site at Ayr where I have a full signal. Tomorrow we move to Luss so will see what happens there. Carol.

Good in Cocermouth Great in Carlisle

DaveandTina 27-04-2008 13:27

Been at Lickpenny Caravan Site this weekend and it works fine there

Telbell 27-04-2008 14:07

...now who's going to be clever enough to put all these Posts on a "map" to give a geographical indication of where the good/bad reception is?

These company "coverage" maps are all well and good but you can't beat a proper members'test of the 3 dongle

erneboy 18-05-2008 14:29

Patchy in N. Ireland. Works well around Belfast and Lisburn. Works in Omagh and in parts in Fermanagh and along the Antrim coast. Works from Limavady to Derry/Lodonderry. Don't know about other areas yet.

I am really happy to see this post as I am addicted to Travian and cant really live without it.

I heard a rumore that you were only allowed to be on it for 2 hours a day, Is that true or is it just about not exceeding the band width usage?

Thanks for any help on this.

hi i bought a 3 payg dongle as i only need it for the van.
we've just come back from France and Spain, coverage in the UK traveling down was fine, my grandson was playing games all the way down to dover. before we left i bought 7gigs for 25 which is way over the top as it has to be used in 30 days. the roaming charges in France and Spain are 3 per meg i did a bit of surfing checking emails bank etc every few days or when i could get a signal (very patchy)
we were away for 3 weeks and I've just Lent the dongle to my mate who's away for the week to use up the remaining credit and its still going strong.

mark.

Sonesta 18-05-2008 15:31

To be honest I am a little disappointed with the Three USB. It works brilliantly in most major towns and cities etc but I personally have found during our travels that in a lot of places the signal is pretty diabolical.

I took the contract out in October last year in readiness for our trip to Italy and was delighted with both the service and the charges whilst touring around Italy and I was able to use my 3GB user allowance all over Italy too. It was great being able to log on whenever we needed to look for a particular campsite or search for local information regarding an area we were visiting and it was reassuring knowing I would not be arriving back home to any extra and exboritant roaming charges other than my monthly contract fee. So for anyone thinking of travelling to Italy ever, I do think it would be very wise to opt for Three's pay as you go USB tariff as whatever user allownce you have, you will be able to use it in Italy too. They did not have the pay as you go option available when I took my contract out but if they had done then I think this would have been the better option to go for as it saves you being tied to Three for 12 months or more and also means you are free to opt for another provider for here in the UK! Also, I could not use Three whilst driving through France and here in the UK like I say, my experience to date has been that it is rather hit and miss in some areas.

I was using a Vodafone 3G datacard prior to changing over to Three last October and personally I very rarely encountered any problems with connection through them and my only disappointment was the horrendous roaming charges you can get lumbered with if you use Vodafone outside of the UK! If Vodafone could offer something like Three do in Italy then Vodafone would be my number 1 choice always!

I have a T Mobile pay as you go web n walk sim card that I insert into my old vodafone datacard (unlocked) and to be honest I have found T Mobile to have much better UK coverage than Three by a long shot!

Hope this helps.

Sue

Hello Sue

Have been able to use your web & walk in Germany or any where else across the channel without incurring the roamng charge.

Thanks

Motorhomer

TravelBug 18-05-2008 22:48

Have used it in Taunton - was quite good, Longleat CC Site - again reasonable speed, Brecon - quite slow but working, Saundersfoot - very intermittent.

Just realised I mis read the post, ours is a Vodaphone Dongle not a 3 Dongle...oops only just realised, about 2 weeks too late lol.

Hi Motorhomer,

As yet I have not been able to test the T mobile outside the UK so unfortunately I cannot answer your question.

Thankyou for your reply Sue. If we do decide to go that way I will try mine.

Used the 3 dongle on the train between Crewe and Lancaster this morning. Good enough reception to download emails. Didn't have any problem with bridges - no tunels on that stretch - expect it would be asking too much to stay connected underground!

3 Dongle

As has been said by others I have had no problems around major towns but out and about in the country not getting a connection at all. Decided to bite the bullet and bought an Orange usb plug-in since then have never failed to connect to the internet. Its speed is very good on the whole so far happier with it than the 3 dongle.

3 Dongle- excellent signal at Chichester C&CC Site

turwic 17-06-2008 15:46

3 Dongle

Works fine in Whitehaven in Cumbria, poor from Egremont then nothing at Gosforth and probably no coverage anywhere round Eskdale area.

Excellant at Rowntree Park cc site in York.

The 3 offer for existing customers is very good 7.50, well worth it
