Gmail bullying

Yesterday I had a pop-up in Gmail asking me to permit Smart features which would allow me to Chat, Meet, etc and wanted access to my calendar, reading emails etc. I said No and found that my Inbox categories were lost, so that all the emails that come in regarding new posts in MHF threads are now all mixed up with all other emails in my Inbox. It's a mess.

I tried to re-instate the categories but I can't have them unless I allow all that other guff. Which I'm not prepared to do.

Have other people had the same problem? Anyone found a way round it?

That might be the nail in the coffin for me as far as Gmail is concerned.

Not yet Jean. I also use Gmail for mhf notifications and the odd obscure French sites.

I dont use it very often so cant really say much but I tried a couple of my gmail addresses with and without the new settings and it just looks the same to me but I hardly use it.

One solution would be to use a mail client on your phone or computer like Outlook and just dump the browser interface altogether.

I'm inclined to think they'll all go the same way in the end. I just feel the permissions they want are too much in one go. I want to pick n choose.

I feel it's impossible to retain any level of privacy today Jean. Apart from all the big boys i.e. Microsoft, Google, Amazon, e-bay, etc. All the other sites we visit glean some info on us. Hence the billions of hacks and lost data admissions round the world.

It is a full time job to stop this data leech which is constantly changing. A couple of times I have tried I found I lost access or was constantly asked to prove who I was. I give up.

I think that you are fighting the tide, Jean. I have often tried to just ignore these edicts to upgrade to one system or another. I have given up now. We are even considering getting a smart phone!!!.
