Dougaitken, you seem to be pretty knowledgeable on things TomTom, do you have any suggestions as to my problems.
The only stuff I can find on their forum is quite a few others experiencing the same frustrations I have.

One thing that has become very obvious to me with this latest issue, is that their support structure is far less user friendly than it used to be, now obviously Asian based and simply an outpost.

Previously you got to speak with someone in Holland who could immediately refer and get either information or authorisation to solve a query, not so now, my recent couple of hours on the phone to "customer support" confirmed they are working to very strict guidelines and when asking to speak with someone in authority the reply was that her supervisor had instructed her on what to do.
Even when trying to get an instant answer to a purchase query gets a delay, I'm still waiting for an answer for a query placed on the 15th.

Also the normal wait I've experienced before getting an assistant is circa 15-20 minutes listening to less than interesting muzak.

Hi EuroJohn

There are always people complaining about things on the Forum its the nature of the beast. People without problems don't say so.

Recently lots were complaining that they could not update their Maps etc or that their units would not log into the TT servers. At the time there was a big bright red banner across the top of the Forum saying that the System was down and that they were trying to sort it out. It took about 2 days to do that.

I recently had cause to contact support because I could not get my new to me GO Camper to log in. I suspected that as I had been able to purchase it at a significantly reduced cost as a working returned unit there may be problem because it had been logged in before by someone else. The, I suspect young, Indian lady quickly confirmed that there was no problem re pre login and after a number of suggestions I successfully logged in and it has worked fine since.

I have no doubt that some of the information Phone in Customer Support gives leaves something to be desired but I also think some misunderstood the information they were given. For example the question of the POI files being only on the cloud. Was that the way it was said or was it the way it was interpreted by the customer.

I find the forum a useful tool to find out what problems are happening and how to resolve those that can be resolved. Also on the Forum you can write private messages to some of the TT employees although I would suggest your first avenue is to raise the problem on the forum and get the answer that way. Doing it that way helps others who may have the same problem.

People have been having problems recently with voice control because they have not got the right voice on their unit. They have been advised on the forum to contact support to have the voice added to their account. Recently some of the Moderators have been advising the complainants that they have sorted the problem out and the voices have been added for them before they actually contact customer support.

I have sent you a PM

Hi Doug... Good to see you posting again.

I didn't know TomTom server was down and will no doubt be the reason my update locked up.

Many thanks for taking the trouble to explain.

A question if I may? I've never inserted an expansion memory card. On a recent major map update I ran out of space on my device, and in order to complete the process it said I could remove Russia as few people visited. This I did. If I now buy a card, have I lost Russia forever, or will it detect the original mapping included that country and provide the original full update again?

I have always said that it was MY unit and never ALL, I have related what I experienced.

Your comment about NOT being able to remove the Bus and Lorry info is an excellent example of how the support services give out false info. I still have the reply telling me they could be removed as one of a chain of exchanges.

I was also told that TT had no intention of producing a Camper version - which was actually what I had tried to get hold of when told my current GO Live 1005 could not be repaired when it stopped GPS inputs or reports - something they later admitted was because someone had switched them off when we had renewed Services.

Three weeks after I purchased the ill fated Truvk version they released another Camper version. Even though I had been hold they had no intentions to produce another Camper version and had stopped releasing the older one as it was no longer capable of being supported.

To me, as a simple, but loyal, user it smacked to me of incompetence in the Support section giving out false information.

The items sold should be able to function as sold straight out of the box - there should be no need to have to consult a forum, or the support section to get the thing running - surely being able to find a route from Romsey to NW9 should not require telephone calls and resetting of a brand new machine ? My one required that and was STILL unreliable... note MY ONE. Others may well work well but I am just suggesting that would be purchasers should be aware of such problems - that is what a forum is all about - the exchange of information and experiences, good and bad.

Hi John

If your unit is getting full there is a risk that the spare memory capacity after maps etc are loaded is less than 400mb. When this happens then some problems can occur.

Get yourself a 16gb or 32gb card, preferably Sandisk or Samsung. Others will work but some don't. Click it into place and then turn on the unit. It should ask you if you want to Format the card and on some units will ask if you want to Format it for Maps or Routs. You want Maps.

If you then go back onto Tomtom MyDrive Connect and look under your Units Content it should show the map that is loaded and any others if you have any. Click on the one that loaded and you should be able to get to the menu you used before to put on the smaller map. With this you can then ask it to put on the Full European Map. When you do this if the map is too big for the internal memory it will delete the map on the internal memory and put the new map on the external memory. The only downside for this is if you create a route and save it on your unit you cannot then download the route to your PC if you want to send it to someone. The solution is to create the route in MY Drive on the PC and save it there. The route will Sync to your unit and you can Export the file if you want from the PC.

A card like this will work.

Where in your above general statement did you say it was peculiar to your Unit or even to your particular Truck Unit which you seem surprised was loaded with Truck and Bus data. I cannot delete the Camping Poi data the comes on the GO Camper but I can stop it being visible on the map are you sure you could not do something similar.

Also like most businesses they do not formally admit they are bringing out a new specialist iteration before they announce it. Therefore Customer support may not have even known but in anycase would have been told not to admit it.

I have the old 1005 and the new Go Camper.

My 1005 is still working perfectly if a little slow sometimes, but ti does need a new battery but I am afraid of doing it myself in case I bugger it up.

My new GoCamper I do not like at all. There are no MHF aires or campsites preloaded on it at all unlike the 1005.

It seems to me when I update the map it first uninstalls the map it has on before installing a new one.

Hi Dave

Hope you have put Carnac to the back of your mind.

If you click on the OLD SITE option at the top of the MHF site and then
Resources you can find various MHF POI files for Aires that you could add to your GO Camper. If you then select the same Generic Symbol for each Aire file you download from the 5 available you can display them on the map. The Unit already has inbuilt the ADAC and ANWB Camper and Campsite file.

Regarding the Map updates you are correct it deletes the old map and loads a whole new one which is why it can take a long time if your download speed is not pretty good.

Regards

Doug
