Exclamation 49,000 miles of paths could be lost forever

Did you know…. the government have set a deadline of 2026 for all footpaths to be registered? If they’re not, the right of way will be lost including ancient routes of travel that have existed across this land for centuries. The right to roam will be gone. But it’s not too late. Go to https://www.ramblers.org.uk/.../dont...-way-2026.aspx to register a right of way. Alternatively search for "Ramblers don't lose your way" on Google.

Agree, it is a big concern, many footpaths have become virtually impossible to use as there has been no maintenance at all and brambles have taken over, farmers have ploughed them up in the quest for easier fields to work, or gates have been placed and locked to prevent legal access.

The five year deadline was purely arbitrary and is designed as a cut off date for the ease of Government and LA action, it also, of course, protects landowners by giving them a final date.

Difficult to see how these actions match with the “right to roam” policies…

Any typo that I make means the errorists win.

Any comments above are only MY OPINION and should be read as that.

I have tried to get involved in this but found it very difficult. There are a couple of places around here where it seems fairly obvious that they were once footpaths long since ploughed up and incorporated into a farmers fields. I could not get anywhere. They seem to be doing good PR but not following it up with physical action.
I accosted a couple of their representatives at a country show once and told them all about the whereabouts of these paths but heard nothing more. Norfolk is very poor for footpaths and bridleways. On our travels we often remark how lucky the locals in Kent, Sussex etc are to have so many.

The only way to claim one here is to walk it and then fill out lots of forms to declare that you and a half dozen others have walked for the past x number of years. We did manage to do it on one path, known as Crinkle Crankle, which the farmer was most annoyed about. On another I was attacked by the (different) farmer with his four by four driving at me and threatening to shoot my dog! He had a visit from plod and may well have lost his firearms licence.

Sadly, Pat I have heard that sort of report often. It seems hard to say “Keep at it” but it’s the only way.

Good luck.
