Travel insurance in UK

I just can't find the right place to put this...

I should have flown home (to Belfast) from Glasgow this afternoon but my BIL went to AnE during the night and had an emergency operation this morning for an abdominal aneurysm.

I extended my car hire - no bother; called Flybe n they have 'held over' my flight so I get the cost of that towards a future flight.

I then called my NW FlexPlus insurance just to let them know. And I'm not covered. Owing to the 'you must have at least 2 nights' accommodation booked' when in the UK. I was staying with family.

I know in the past when that regulation was in force they've taken a booked ferry as proof of a 'travel' situation but this time the girl is saying No.

What do you think? Any relevant experience? I'll have extra expense for the car, the flight, and also for medication (I'd only 1 extra day with me).
