A1 Gateshead - More Disruption

Just as the major roadworks to widen the A1 are nearing completion, a sink hole has caused the northbound carriageway only, to be closed until at least Wednesday.
The usual diversions from the overnight closures will be in place throughout and it is being reported locally that the Tyne Tunnel barriers on the A19 will remain open for free passage northbound, to alleviate some of the congestion.

A1 - Gateshead (Update)

For anyone venturing north on the A1 Western Bypass, Gateshead.... At approximately 0500hr today, we received notification that the sink hole that has had the A1 closed for a few days, has been rectified and the A1 is running again in both directions.

The ongoing roadworks are nearing completion, but at the moment a 40mph speed restriction is still in force, but the average speed cameras have gone.

While verge and carriageway works continue in the inside lane, only the two outer lanes in each direction are open, with a 6' 6" width restriction in the outside lane. This restriction will be permanent, but will eventually only affect the outermost lane of three.

Ken.
