Travelling North to South. M1

Having just returned from a trip in Durham , we left along the A1 and down towards the M1 just north of Leeds.

There are currently lots of road works around Sheffield on the M1, so took the A1 and then M18. It flowed really well, with no issues.

Just a helpful tip. ( ignore the sat nav )

That route is also a lot less miles! the sat nav should have picked that route if you were on the fastest route.

Sat navs do sometimes seem to assume that motorways are always faster. When we visit family in Colchester, driving from N Wales, we usually take the M6 and then the A14 (via Cambridge) to Ipswich, then A12.

The alternative is to turn off the A14 at Cambridge and take the M11. According to google maps, this second route takes 10 minutes longer, and in practise can be much slower if there is congestion around Stanstead, but the sat nav, set to fastest route, always tries to get us to take the M11.

It's always worth checking the map before you set out, rather than relying on sat nav.
