Export plates on own insurance.

Can I get export plates in Germany and use my own insurance? I would like to tour for a few months without having to pay for a second insurance which is only third party.

I think the issue for you would not be insurance but rather the export plates will not be valid for that lengths of time, from memory they are only good for 1 month.

I thought that I could get at least three months.

porterboy, I've just checked on some of the German export plates and documentation I got with them, (I've done a few) the expiration date on them is related to the insurance duration, the only other info for them is that the vehicle must have left Germany before the expiration.

I'd suggest that you seek positive advice (not forum hearsay) before going ahead with your plans.

That means that I just need them to accept that my insurance is acceptable. I read somewhere that electronic verification of insurance is required. Whatever that is? Might put this up on other forum.

Are you importing into uk from Germany?
If so you have to go back to uk as soon as possible and only to your place of residence and not use the van until it has been reregistered.

I have imported 5 times and on one occasion DVLA queried the mileage from dealer to home.

I presume that that is just in case you were using it in the UK unregistered and untaxed I would think.
