Rotten eggs, bad battery

The camper is closed up for moment but it smelled of rotten eggs. One of my batteries was steaming hot and spewing out that terrible smell. So my question is would that always indicate over charging or could it be that the battery just went bad on its own. Can I just buy a new battery or do I need to search for another problem with the charging system.

If you have questions about touring, living, driving, etc in Italy message me.

Could just have been a fault in the battery. I'd change it and keep an eye out for the new one heating up. If it did then I'd look for a fault in the charging.

Brexiters. It's your sh1t now. Whatever happens nationally and internationally you own it. I wish you luck. I think you're going to need all you can get and then some. Friday 13th December 2019.

Older batteries can have one cell down compared to the others and get cooked trying to maintain optimum voltage. Same as having two dissimilar batteries being charged at the same time. One will suffer overcharging and eventually fail. But rotten eggs smell is an indication of a cooked battery.
