Ralph, my first encounter with Castle Eden ale was at Oliver's Mount, Scarborough. I can't remember the exact brew, (late 80s - early 90s) but I do remember enjoying it.
The only other I've had from your list of your local breweries, is Newky Brown, though I've never sampled it at it's original strength, of 6.5% ABV.
Last night, I had the fortune to sample Charles Wells Bombardier Reserve, (The Colonel's Choice) but hand pulled, and at 5.2% ABV. It was excellent, and much favoured by most ale drinkers in the pub, which was a Charlie Wells house for many many years. http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/664/96419/
BTW, I've had a couple of glasses of Bombardier in The John Bull Pub...................in Toulouse of all places.
I asked for a pint (my ignorance) and the barman pulled the beer. Looking at the glass, I said, "That's not a pint", and the barman replied (in a French accent) "You are correct Monsieur, however, it's as close to a pint as you are going to get in here."
I had forgotten that they were serving in 500ml glasses, and not pint glasses.
