RIP John Hume

A Titan of a man and peacemaker.
Too good in life to be forgotten in death.

“Difference is of the essence of humanity. Difference is an accident of birth and it should therefore never be the source of hatred or conflict.”

Panicked when I discovered my gas lighter had run out of gas. But I found some matches I didn't know I had.

It was important to mark the passing of a great man, someone way ahead of his time.

His Nobel Peace Prize somehow passed me by as I was unaware that he got it I often thought that someone should have got something for the amazing achievement that was the Good Friday Agreement. A great man indeed. It speaks volumes of him that he faded into the background once he had achieved his goal.

One remembered John Hume verbal exchange thatís just as relevant today....

"One night on British TV, he was lectured by a well-meaning but condescending chap from the Shires: 'Why, oh why, canít you Irish forget?'. 'Itís simple,' was the reply: 'itís because you English can never remember'."

This from Colum Eastwood sums up John Hume perfectly.

You really are wasting your time trying to pick an argument with dead statesman.

Brexiters. It's your sh1t now. Whatever happens nationally and internationally you own it. I wish you luck. I think you're going to need all you can get and then some. Friday 13th December 2019.

Well if you wish to replicate the condescension the chap from the shires exhibited, yeah it would include you, if not, no.

Don’t try to pick a hole in John’s words, you know as well as I do there’s quite a few who have similar mindsets. I won’t besmirch his memory debating it with you and I won’t pollute this thread with contrived controversy, so like it or lump it, I’m out.

No from what I know of John Hume it was his unshakable faith in the possibility of peace that lead to the Good Friday Agreement

A lasting legacy to the memory of the man

I imagine all sides of the dispute owe gratitude to his determination to find a peaceful solution
