MHF insurance - whats not covered
I have the van insurance with MHF and its a good price - well I though it was.
We are off to France and Spain next week and taking the bikes with us for the first time. I thought I would check if they are covered on the insurance. The policy advert says personal belongings are covered, but when you read the policy document there is a list of everything you can think of that isn't covered such as cameras, phones, bikes, laptops, sat nav, cash, cards, etc. They even especially mention stamp collections are not covered! I phoned to clarify and its right, the only personal belongs that are covered are essentials such as you socks, saucepans, bedding, etc. and told that my bikes and other items need to be covered by any household or other insurance. Perhaps need to check whats covered with the travel insurance. Anyway, I'm not necessarily complaining but just a warning to others if they think they are fully covered for everything they take away with them - especially if you like to travel with your stamp collection. Its not clear if my insect collection on the number plate is covered? |
some policies allow you to add personal items up to a certain value for an additional premium, but in the main most motor policies would expect you to have cover for personal items (including sports equipment like bikes, skis etc) covered under either a household policy or a specialist policy.
I had this a couple of years ago when my wife's handbag was stolen - inside were her car keys including transponder fob. I assumed this was covered under my car policy so contacted the insurer's who said no - they should be covered by a household or specialist policy. I didn't have key cover so needed to pay for replacements although the car insurers insisted the locks were replaced - just in case the handbag thief tracked the vehicle down and used the keys (unlikely - the bag was stolen over 60 miles from home!) and the policy covered that. |

But if you get gassed then the £2,000 cash that you happen to be carrying probably would be covered...... they always have that sort of sum of money with them...... Dave  |
but what if I really was gassed, stole my £2000 and then used my bikes as a get away.
I'm more worried about the insect collection. I've had some of those for years. Especially the squashed one of the left. Its an early example. |

We are insured with MHF. When we were robbed last year in France we had to claim under our household insurance. We are insured with More Than - best thing we ever did! Everything, including cash up to a limit of about £600, was covered on a new for old basis. Claim was completed in less than 4 weeks after our return to UK, very impressed with the whole thing. Even better - no rise in our renewal premium. So, IMHO, a combination of MHF (or Comfort) motorhome insurance and More Than for house and contents, including our bikes even when on back of M'home. Not the cheapest but if you need to claim cheapest isn't always best!!!
