One of the classic ways is called 'stick and cane'
They use either a bamboo cane with a hook on the end and retrieve the keys through the letterbox from such places as the hall stand. Some lowlife have used fishing rods, if stopped and questioned by the police they say 'just going night fishing'.
If you have a vestibule door close it and don't just throw your keys down when you come in.
What would the insurers do if the key was in one of those magnetic boxes that were popular years ago. When we go away my wife carries the spare set.
