12v not working on my thetford n180

Hi all,

I have a fiat ducato based autotrail cheyenne 660se 2007 and the thetford n180 fridge is not working when on 12v (van running). I have replaced the fridge PCB and the 12v heater element, plus the fridge works in 240v and gas. When I put the fridge in battery mode (ie charged form the van) the 12v switch relay on the fridge pcb clicks on and off and affects the whole van, for example the aircon light flashes on and off in time with the pcb relay, the engine slightly revs up and down and the fridge light flashed in time as well. I think it is a dead short at some point but there are no issues that I can see. I believe somewhere in the van there is a fridge power relay, but I can not find it. Any ideas guys.......

It’s in the EM50 interface unit, usually situated on the floor in a seat cupboard behind the drivers seat.

The EM50 is a Sargent unit perhaps a call to them would help, they’re usually very good on customer care and support.

Yes there are two, one for the fridge and one for the step.
There are several version of the EM50s, A, B and C if my memory is correct. The version number is printed on the internal PCB.

I assume you have checked that 12v is actually getting to the fridge?

Our two relays (as mentioned for fridge and for step) are located under the scuttle behind the air filter in a black box - there are two relays and two fuses there.

Ours is a Kontiki so is probably not the same, but that is another place that might be worth checking - ifthefuse or relay has failed, no 12v supply will get to the fridge although the light will, of course, still work when the 12v supply is on and the engine is not running.

Any typo that I make means the errorists win.

Any comments above are only MY OPINION and should be read as that.

It's not solving your problem but do you really NEED it to run on 12v? Usually the fridge will hold its temperature for several hours if the doors aren't opened. You wouldn't be doing that much driving between stops would you?
