Hi, my name is Jim and apart from a week away in Devon last month am a complete novice. I have one or two questions being a Hobby 750 owner 2001. My first question is I need a pump up awning/safari room, looking at all the options it seems that the Hobby is not tall enough for most. Any help on what/where etc. would be appreciated.
I don't wish to be awkward but are you sure you need that pump-up awning?
I've not ever had one but I do read from time to time of folk who've bought some kind of 'full' awning only to be selling it pretty much unused later on.
If you 'sit' for long in the one place then I guess it could be useful. But if you move fairly frequently I'd say it could be a curse.
I'd give yourself a bit more time to figure out what style of motorhoming suits you best before you make a fairly substantial investment like that.
Basically I'd agree with you Jean, however if you stay in one place for any extended period an awning can be a very useful addition.
The drive away version of inflatable ones are very good, the drive away function allows you to go off in the van and leave the awning fully assembled and has the added advantage of keeping your space.
We find it very useful when away in the winter (Spain Portugal), you can leave a table erected and somewhere for the bikes.
In our early days, we, like so many others thought that the "safari room" type was essential, we soon realised the folly of that, and ours joined the always to be found classified ads.
Hi Jim,
i really agree with all the others. I bought a full awning after about 6 months of motorhoming and used it once....... we ended up with a pop up tent for all our stuff as needed more space inside, but even got rid of that in the end and just got rid of stuff we don't need. But it takes time to realise what you really need and how you want to do it. We are all different. Take your time and enjoy the process:smile2:
Hi Jim, I can only speak from my own experience and it may be that you've a clear understanding of what you want and that you are absolutely right that an inflatable awning is right for you - I've thought about one also.
However, probably half the stuff I've bought over the years has actually been needed and some hardly used. Luckily I have a large garage in the van and a generous payload so it just stays there filling the place up.
I've read before that many people don't find their ideal motorhome to the third one they buy - I can believe that.
The point of what I'm saying is are you really sure that is what you want and that it will suit your style of motorhoming? I've read that inflatable awnings are great in "fair weather" but if you are planning on using it out of season in exposed areas, then not all may be suitable. And so on. If you're sure you know what you want then I'm also sure that most motorhome dealers who sell accessories will give you advice. Although not particularly near you, you could try Johns Cross motorhomes - they will give you good advice on the phone.
