recommended stop near Calais for 1 night in August...

we have our first motorhome trip to france in mid august - we have two boys (7 and 10) with lots of energy!!. All our sites are booked but we will be heading up towards Calais from the Vendee on the last day and looking at somewhere good to stop over (around an hour or so from calais) so we can get up the next day and drive to the tunnel.

any recommendations of sites - realise that we are leaving it a little late - any thoughts, we are in a 7 metre long motorhome, 3 metre high. We love good food so we have stopped at Wimereux before but not with a gigantic motorhome!!

If all else fails, the motorway aire at Baie de Somme on the A16 is superb. Dedicated MH/Caravan parking area away from everything, odds and sods, including a viewing tower, together with large area of (long) grass, and decorative ponds. MH service point near the main building,

The Baie de Somme aire on the. A16 autoroute is my recommendation too.
65 miles from the tunnel.
We've been stopping there with our 7.25m motorhome 6 times a year for the last 5 or 6 years and always felt safe.
There is a borne for loo emptying and space to have a walk.

Less than an hours drive from Calais is the walled fortified town of Bergues

It has a very large free aire , (no facilities other than rubbish bins )

The town is just off the A25 free motorway to Lille

Your boys would love explorering the old town walls !

I wouldn't stop off in Lille if I was coming north from the Vendee as is PS2007.

We always stop at the free aire at Montreuil sur Mer (which contrary to the name is inland!) Short detour from the autoroute, 5 min walk to the centre of the town with many great restaurants. Best for reasonable price is Le Caveau, if you like fine dining and want to pay quite a bit more next door is Le Clos des Capucins - all on the website below. 1 hour from Calais. Lovely circular walk around the town's ramparts with great views and sheer drops - French do not bother with H&S!

You just turn up! It's a motorway aire so people are coming and going all the time but there are places for motorhomes to park which are well away from the filling station and shop hence you can get a peaceful nights sleep. Ordinarily many on here wouldn't recommend stopping overnight at a motorway aire but Baie de Somme is different. I have stopped there several times and would definitely stop there again! Another advantage is that you can get fresh croissants from the shop in the morning

Infamy, infamy! They've all got it in for me!

A small point.
Be aware that Saturday night and Sunday and Sunday evening the aires (including Baie de Somme) on the roads approaching the ports get well used by the lorries parking up as they cannot use the autorouutes on Sundays due to restrictions.

In my albeit limited experience, an additional benefit of Baie de Somme is that lorries don't make use of the MH picnic area we are talking about, nor the nearby car picnic area which can be used as MH overflow. Possibly because of the difficulty of an artic turning there.
