Watersports, cycling, walking, bungee jumping...most of these have been suggested above.

Are they interested in nature? Some decent binoculars, and they might enjoy birdwatching, and if they have cameras they could photograph the wildlife they find.

get them scrapbooks, and encourage them to write about their experiences while away. They can stick in photos or any other interesting bits and pieces they find.

Find out if there are any local fairs or festivals on near where you are staying. They are free, and there's usually lots to see and do. Likewise, free concerts etc (plenty in Europe).

Get them a dog that likes to play and needs lots of walks...

1 up for GeoCaching - a great way to visit places you wouldn't normally go with the addition of a little competition and technology use along the way!

I remember camping as a teenager. The best thing we were given - was freedom.

We went camping with friends and their parents. Every afternoon the parents went for a 'snooze' and we were told to do our own thing. We stayed at national parks, where rangers provided activities for kids. We could join in, or go for walks, bicycles rides - just explore!!!

I think we were very lucky - how many kids these days are shown confidence/trust by their parents? (and please don't tell me that the world is more dangerous now) We had to learn how to deal with being 'bored'; but also, how to deal with situations.

This doesn't cost much, but will allow your kids to develop into great adults.

We tried out GeoCaching at the weekend. It was good fun and we will definitely do it again.
