Is this a con??

This maybe the wrong forum but....

As some of you may know I am selling both my motorhome and toad as they are advertised on here as well as on Auto Trader.

This morning I received an email with the following message

Quote. Thank you for the mail, i am buying this for my Dad ,i am a petroleum engineer currently on a rig offshore i really want this to be a surprise gift for my Dad so i wont let him know anything about this until it gets delivered to him , i am sure he will be more than happy with it.I can only pay with PayPal here, i will need you to give me your PayPal email address so i can make the payments asap and please if you don't have PayPal account yet, it is very easy to set up, go to www.paypal.com and get it set up , after you have set it up i will only need the e-mail address you use for registration with PayPal so as to put the money through.....

Note well:
Pick up agent will come for the pick up as soon as i have made the payment,as a petroleum engineer I work mainly offshore, our phone is down on the rig right now due to bad weather, we can only communicate with our base for now. But if the deal is sealed, then i can look for a means to call you.
End Quote

Now is this a con as the guy has never asked me any details nor has he wanted to come and see the m/h etc? It just makes me very suspicious especially after reading some of the other messages on here.

This modus operandi was actually broadcast on Radio 4 a few days ago. They pay you, collect goods meanwhile payment is withdrawn. No paypal protection because the goods are collected.

So if Radio 4 suggests its a con it probably is.

It is a totol con, he will file a PayPal claim and get his money back.

When selling your van, insist on a Chaps transfer or a Bankers Draft, if a draft telephone the issuing bank with the details or get your bank to do it as there are fake drafts about.

Do not part with the van until you are sure the funds are in your account and cannot be cancelled

Yes - Steve has explained very clearly.

Best to ask and be sure though. That's what the forum is here for - to help each other when in doubt.

maybe some people do need to ask.
why be so snipey?
puts people off asking for help when you answer like that.

did you get out of bed the wrong side today or are you always like that?
