New French towing regulations...

I have been hearing on another forum that France are introducing new towing regulations in January. One poster specifically said January 21st....

However, I can find nothing definitive.... Is this just Chinese whispers or does anyone have any specific knowledge?

Nope, nuffink.

Could it be that they are following Spain in banning cars being towed behind motorhomes?

We witnessed this first hand when someone pulled onto our campsite and told us the Spanish police had made them unhitch their car and leave it by the side of the road. They only had one driver as the other person was unfit to drive on medical grounds.

Not heard anything and "Connexion" is usually very hot on such things.

French registered vehicles are not allowed to tow using A frame, only on trailer - insurance is invalidated if do so, that has been the law in Spain for some time and many Brits have found that out to their peril.

FWIW. There is an oft repeated comment on the MMM forum reiterating that A Frames are definitely illegal in France...which of course is a well known fact......but typically not enforced by the police.

PS. I now see it was initiated in the French 'Camping Car' magazine.

AFAIK A frames have not been deemed "illegal" since that would apparently require a change in EU Law, but the French Government instructed the insurance companies that if an A frame was used they would be required to annul the insurance.

That only concerns French registered vehicles and so enforcement would be by the insurers in the event of a claim. It shifts the responsibility to the insurers rather than the Police - crafty idea to give the insurers yet another "Get Out clause".

It also means that it does not apply to vehicles registered outside France which otherwise would be affected by making them "illegal".

Any typo that I make means the errorists win.
