In case you haven’t seen it the basic outline is that 5 couples have to travel from the UK to Singapore overland ( without using planes ) via 5 checkpoints ( Delphi, Baku, Tashkent, Huangyao & Koh Rong ). My idea, when I retire is to attempt to travel as far as I can mixing camping and accommodation. I believe China may be difficult.
We have been motorhoming on&off for 10 years mostly around Europe and intend swapping our Hobby MH for a VW Campervan ( 4Motion, T5 or T6 )
Has anyone done anything similar or know anyone who has? What’s the furthest you have gone in this direction? Any comments or pointers to web-sites that may have useful information greatly appreciated? Also recommendations for VW campervan conversions?
Thanks for the really +ve response.
Early 2021 - just have to make sure we don't do too much planning.
Hope to keep posting questions ( in the planning process ) and updates as things progress.
I saw this programme for the first time yesterday. It seems to be a scaled down clone of the American TV programme called The Amazing Race. Its been going for years. 14 couples set off from USA to various destinations around the world according to instructions and clues. There are challenges and forfeits, and the last team to arrive at the check-in every time, gets eliminated, leaving 3 couples to race it out for the final winning post back in USA. Very very interesting if you're keen on travel and seeing the world and its peoples/customs/food/sights etc. Is it perhaps on Sky?? We only have free TV.
Before retiring we started planning an overland trip to Australia but it never got very far.
Our plan was to use a fifth-wheeler, so that we could explore along the route using a reasonable off-road machine, which would withstand the trials of the terrain and be reasonably easy to maintain and repair if necessary.
We enjoyed the TV prog last year and must look to see if this is a new version.
We also enjoyed a series about a guy who cycled all round the globe and were amazed at his poor planning, such as travelling through India during Ramadan, so he was unable to get food during the day. He also mis-timed the monsoon period. I'm sure there could be similar problems with motorised transport, so worth considering as many factors as you can.
Similarly, the "Long Way Round/Down" series with Ewan McGregor and Charlie Borman would be worthy of study. I think there was one prog where they kept the engines running overnight in a "heated" garage in one of the "Stans" because otherwise it would not be capable of withstanding the cold.
We met a couple from Australia who had a Toyota Land Cruiser with extended fuel tanks and a tent bed on the top of the van. It had taken them 2 years but the did stop with friends in various countries for a few days to give them a break. Overland Armstrongs on facebook.
