How best to sell?

We are thinking of changing our much loved 11 year-old van for a new model and so are wondering how best to sell. The options seem to be:

- part ex - easiest option but probably not going to give the best price.
- ebay - we've bought and sold lots of stuff here but never something as expensive as a vehicle and are wary of potential problems

- local ads - probably not going to reach a wide 'audience'
- national press - costly, slow?

- social media - good for reaching lots of people
- this site's 'for sale' section
- parked at side of road with 'For Sale' sign in window!

Sorry if I seem a bit negative! We'd love to hear of any other ideas that we could consider? What are people's experiences with various methods?

Go to camper shows and stick a 'For Sale' sign in window.

All of your ideas have good and bad points to them.

Only you can determine which is the best for you.

I sold a £30K MH privately via the CMC’s “For Sale” section. I was contacted by a chap who was interested, he asked all of the “right” questions so clearly knew EXACTLY what he was looking at buying model wise. He drove down from a long way North.

I insisted on proof of his identity/address and took his photograph (all of which he readily agreed to) and then the purchaser transferred funds, via direct bank transfer into my account using HIS laptop. I then used MY laptop to check the funds had arrived and then transferred them, via bank transfer straight into another account. I got about £5K more than I had been offered in PX.

I also had the usual “It’s exactly what I want, my car is broken, can you bring it to xxxxx and I will pay you the asking price” type of phone calls. They were all advised “If you want it, come and see it and we will then go to the bank to get funds transferred” None of them took me up on that offer!

So be very careful, a genuine buyer will be open and happy to jump through some hoops. ANY reticence is a clear signal not to proceed.

Andy

P.s. Or PX it, but be aware you will never get as much money as you will privately.

We bought our van from a local ad in the paper.
When the time came to sell it we put it outside and left it there (off road) and, eventually, someone came and offered to buy it :)

It depends what you are selling, in terms of popularity.

Some marques have a special following, either from existing owners or potential new owners wanting that marque.

If this is the case the Owners Clubs on the internet would be another place to advertise. I would certainly do that were I selling our N&B Arto.

Do make sure to say whether it is RHD or LHD - some people only want one or the other.

Thanks to all - we took the easy way in the end and traded in because the price offered seemed prety good.

Well done. As you say, sometimes the easy way is the best.

You'll have to do it off-site. Not allowed to compete with the "paying guests'. Saw a van parked up 'across the road' at the recent Norfolk moho show. Not sure how successful that would be.
