Cleaning a water tank

We have a 20 ltr. Fresh water can in the shower, with pump. Today Hans noticed a hard chalk residue at the bottom of the can and asked me to get my little hand in to give it a scrub, even I couldn't reach the whole area so I cleaned it the way I do our shower head and the kettle with a few shakes of vinegar essence and boiling water, gave it a few minutes to work swished it round a few times and you could see the chalk coming off. He then put this solution through the pump circulating it severely times because the tube was discoloured and hey preso, clean tube and can. He then rinsed both with fresh water, no smell left behind and I'm sure no damage to anything.
Just thought I'd tell you that. Unfortunately we can't do the same with our on-board water tank.😟

Vinegar. I do it regularly for the whole water system in the van.

I run the tank dry and add around 20lt in the tank then run the water through till it's very vi.negary and leave it overnight before rinsing. I leave the electric water heater on overnight too.

I'm aiming to get a solution of 50 50 into the system. Calculate what your boiler and pipes hold and buy half that in vinegar. NOT the whole fresh water tank before someone asks.

It works very well. Cleaning vinegar is a few cents a litre from Lidl.

I have never seen or heard of cleaning vinegar Alan, I use essence 25% whatever that may mean a couple of shakes in half a pint of water boiled in the s/s kettle and it's shiny new.

You'll see litre plastic bottles in Lidl. Not sure what it's for if not cleaning.

One litre white vinegar lasts us about a year cleaning kettles and shower hoses and heads multiple times. 59 cents.

I also use vinegar in the spray bottle for the loo - stops any calcium buildup there too, which holds the smells. Just thought you'd like to know that!

What a good idea Jean, our water is very hard and makes the loo look terrible, I will do that when I get home. 😃

Isn't wine vinegar a bit expensive to use as a cleaner ? My white essence always works well on taps , kettle, shower head etc.

I'm not sure that the origins of the vinegar would make much difference one way or another. What you are employing is just it's acidity.
