Booking sites in France

Of to France for 6 weeks as from 1st April. We have booked a site for over Easter but bearing in mind the time of the year would we be ok for a pitch just turning up at a campsite or best to book in advance?

No need to book. Some sites near the coast get rammed in August but the rest of the year you will have no problems. We usually go to France in May/June and have never had a problem.

Happy travels

In my experience, I have found that many French Campsites do not open until around June. It is a good idea to find out sites which are 'All year' sites and to check out, beforehand, any site that you anticipate visiting. I once went to La Rochelle, to a site that I had visited before (Le Soleil), and found that it was closed until the following week which was late June. Also, it's worth taking an Aires book with you in case you get stuck for somewhere to stay.

And Easter is iffy as many French sites don't open until after Easter.

Many sites open at Easter [Paques] for the season. If it is sites you want then perhaps the ASCI Camping Card Book part 2 is what you need. Even if you make no use of the ASCI card it had details of thousands of French sites.

We travel extensively in France and unless you require a certain site at a popular place in July and August then booking is not necessary.

Just turn up or use your phone, there are no minimum bookings until 7/7 as that is when French national holidays start.

If you have an ASCI card and book you can get good reductions before the summer, bear in mind half-term in May is not a French occurrence, the schools will close for the, what seems to be 32 fete days in May but is actually three; May Day, VE DAY, Ascension Day.

Have fun.

Remember Jo Cox and what she stood for.

Any comments above are only MY OPINION and should be read as that.

Thanks for the reply's, I have the ACSI book and have managed to book a site at the Verdon Gorge for Easter. Just want to meander down there hence not being hindered by having to be at a booked site.

The only site I have ever known to be full out of season was Flower Camping Ile d'Offard in Saumur. We were the last to book in before the full signs went up & that was 11th September last year. Apparently they have no low season. very popular site but also very nice.
