Payment through Paypal - advice please

Alarm bells are ringing loudly for me. However, I thought it worth asking advice (for a potential genuine buyer) even though I have already kicked this one out of touch.

I am selling my van and I have received an email (diverted through the advertising site) offering to buy my van - UNSEEN - and ‘they would pay through PayPal and have their mover collect the van once I confirmed the payment’. I asked why he didn’t even want to see the van and his reply was that he was on deployment and his mover would inspect once I had confirmed the payment. Well there you have it. What a load of twaddle. Screams SCAM to me in capital letters.

What is the best way to receive payment? My thoughts are by direct money transfer into my account. Do people use PayPal to buy vehicles?

Will be grateful for advice.

Sal

This is almost certainly a scam, whilst I cannot recall the exact forum or thread that I had read it on I ‘think’ it revolves around a false PayPal, but I cannot be certain. It certainly sounds familiar. I would urge caution until someone with a better understanding of this potential scam answers.

I think you got it right in one.........................................

If you want my van,you come to me and inspect it and we meet and haggle a bit .............................................if we agree we discuss methods of

payments.................. but I would go for a bank draft and then you come and collect when I have the money...........you know where I live (also on the V5)

Now that's a great age and a great adventure for a rabbit and I think he deserves a mention.

Once the van goes, he will open up a dispute with Paypal. You will then have lost your money and your van. 100% SCAM
Even if he offers to sign for the van when it is collected Paypal will refuse to accept this.

Thanks guys. Yes indeed an obvious scam. However, for payment from a genuine buyer, I was wondering re a bank draft against a direct bank transfer. I favour direct bank transfer as I do all my banking online, however that involves giving my bank details. Just trying to play safe!

Bank transfer is how we sold our last van as it was a private sale that way you can wait until you see the money in your bank before handing over the docs and keys……..in fact it all took just minutes to go through.

As I'm a dyslexic and I've had two stokes you are going to see spelling/grammar mistakes, so please don't act superior and point them out!

Never ever take payment via Paypal for a van sale, direct bank transfer or cash is the only way I will do it, thee is bacs, but it's a little more complicated.

Some idiot has been trying to scam me for mine from Turkey, a mate was going to come and look at it for him, but I just stopped answering his messages.

I would never accept a bankers draft as they can be forged. Whenever I have sold a vehicle or motorhome I have always insisted on a bank transfer and I never release the item until my bank confirm that the money is in my account and that it cannot be recalled under any circumstances. It is quite safe to supply the buyer with your account number and sort code.

With my recent motorhome sale I had already banked a couple of smaller holding deposit cheques that cleared and had the buyers address. So the final bulk of the monies I was happy to take a further cheque.

Any genuine buyer would understand the need for security on payment I reckon.

When I sold a car once, both I and the buyer went into the town centre to his bank to do the transfer together.
