Question 80s/90s Mercedes Auto-Trails - Any Good?

Would love to own a motorhome and I really like the look and practicality of the old Auto-Trails on the Mercedes chassis, for example the Apache or the Chieftain model. However I can't seem to find much info on them, and I can't find any specs online of the different models. Does anyone have one, and are they good?

The Mercedes part of them will be brilliant from that era, anything before 2000 was considered the best.

I have heard the Autotrails were good from that era too although never had one. A damp check would be essential to start with, then all the usual checks after.

I'd have any of the Early Sprinter ones, but not keen on previous mercs, 310 is better than 312 IMHO, less stress on the gearbox, and only about 10 bhp difference I think.

There was an immaculate D-reg [1987] Merc AutoTrail at the Sandringham Caravan Club site this week. The owners had bought it three years ago and said it had only 66,000 miles on the clock and had been well looked after. They were thinking of buying a newer van now they were committed motorhomers after a three year trial.

The Merc base was described as being able to climb 1:1 hills - slowly. And slowly is what it did everything. The AutoTrail part was considered good quality in its day.

Downside is that you will be buying a 20 year old plus vehicle which will show in the driving dynamics and safety. Upside, you might get a bargain and have many happy years with a classic.

Try the AutoTrail Owners Club for information.
