Hello,
This is my first post.I have a 2017 Mercedes Sprinter 314 LWB campervan.Hopefully I am going on a nice long road trip starting November 12th and getting back home on December 20th.I will be boarding the DFDS ferry North Shields England heading overnight to Ijmuiden Holland.Then heading for Rostock Germany to catch another ferry to Trelleborg Sweden.Then heading north and east up the east coast of Sweden making my way Thru Rovaniemi Finland onwards and upwards to Kirkenes Norway and then the North Cape.My route back will be via Jokkmokk Sweden and anywhere else my heart desires or the road and weather allows.My Sprinter does not come fitted with an auxiliary water heater which you can plug into and keep the coolant warm overnight.I have looked on Amazon and they sell engine oil sump heaters which you bond to the bottom of the sump.Then you plug it in remotely overnight and that keeps the engine oil temp warm to hot.
What do you reckon oil sump heater plugged in or just leave the engine running for as long as possible.Or just as is .............your thoughts appreciated

My initial thought is that you're going the wrong way at that time of the year! But each to his own.

I'm afraid I've not done any motorhoming that far north in winter but there are folk on here who are accustomed to pretty low temperatures so hopefully can give you some advice.

If there's not much coming after a day or two try starting a new thread with a more relevant title - How to stop coolant freezing in Sweden, for instance.

And welcome to the forum! I can't wait to hear about your trip!

Will it be that cold in Nov/ Dec ?

The heater you refer to will need to plugged into a street bollard to power it I assume they are main AC voltage

There are other AC heaters that are plumbed into the radiator hoses

For a portable solution consider a Webasto or Eberspacher diesel heater that is plumbed into the engine coolant circuit and runs on diesel ( Petrol versions also available ) from the fuel tank but these are more use to warm an engine prior to starting ( maybe limited to 60 mins runtime ) than to keep it warm all night

Have you also considered the need for winter tyres and snow chains ?

Some interesting results

Eg

A general rule of thumb is to plug in your engine block heater when the weather reaches -15° C or lower, just to be safe. If you drive a diesel vehicle, you may need to plug in the engine block heater before temperatures drop that low

Hello Trek,
Thank you for replying my has winter tyres fitted,I also have a set of snow chains .The camper has a Diesel night heater for the habitation area of the vehicle.
I have a friend who lives in Tromso he says it never gets below minus 10 on the western coast but plummets inland.

I will post a travelogue with pictures when I get home
