Ah Ha!!!!

If it's a TRUE auto then it probably has a gearbox fluid cooler fitted, and THAT may well have its own dedicated fan so it MIGHT be that, rather than the Aircon fan kicking in?? Or perhaps the Aircon fan doubles up as a gearbox cooler fan??? Worth further research, Especially as you had other gearbox "issues" at the same time.

Just a thought.

Andy

Its not the destination that matters.

It's who you share the journey with (even if like me, itís in a caravan!)
I am very fortunate to have Mrs Plodd to share mine with

Andy, true auto with torque converter and a transmission fluid cooler which is a dual tube finned device situated in front of the main radiator, no separate fan.
The A/C fan is only to help the viscous coupling main cooling fan in high ambient temperatures when slow airspeed through the radiator is insufficient to maintain the correct coolant temperature.

The symptoms of my problem were from first cold start when not particularly hot and without A/C being selected or in use.

Like I said, just a thought.

IF there was an additional fan that was for the gearbox oil cooler only AND it had been that which was operating it would have been controlled by a sensor in the gearbox so the two MIGHT be connected. (Fan operating and gearbox playing up)

Clearly that's not the solution but I thought I would check it in just in case.
