I too would get a second opinion.

It may well be possible to have the steering rack reconditioned or even to buy a replacement reconditioned unit. Ask a few local Motor Factors if they have a listing or if they can get it reconditioned (if it is at all necessary of course).

Possible also that the brake discs are available from a Motor Factors at a fraction of the cost from a main dealer.

Appart from the cambelt I imagine they are seriously extracting the Pee.

I also have a small independant commercial and general garage etc who is also a Merc expert.
Our van is now ten years old with 43K on the clock.
When I take it in and suggest the widget or whatever might need replacing or checking he just politely suggests I leave it to him and he reminds me that the van has yet to attain the average mileage for a six month old vehicle. To date only routine parts replaced, filters, oil, tyres. He does think the exhaust may need sorting within the next couple of years.
