Just a thought...

could one of the small individually run garages with a tradition of having REAL mechanics and no computers, dismantle and rebuild the parts?

That may sound like more work, but fewer parts and often there are specialists around who do such things for vehicles where spares are not so readily available.....

As I said, just a thought....

gonna pull the diff and half shafts out over weekend see what is the real problem
if I know where to get the bits from like the bearings or what ever has failed I could rebuild myself
just not sure where to turn rang a few dismantelers and just get a laugh off them when I asked 😕

Try local Motor Factors. There are a number of firms around that remanufacture bits like drive shafts, steering racks etc and a Motor Factors may keep stock/order one or be able to get it re-done for you.

Cant really help Ian as I am hopeless with mechanics but just wanted to say welcome to the forum.

Our van is a 1996 Swift Kontiki and there were loads made but already I have problems sometimes getting the Peugeot Boxer bits. There are breakers and dealers out there that seem to be Aladins caves of spare parts and I have always found what I need usually with a post or two on here.

Hope you stick around as you sound like you know what your talking about. Always good to have another mechanically minded person in the forum.

good luck.

As you seem to be mechanically able, I ask does the drive shaft turn as far as the diff. If so then as you say it is in the diff. Parts will be difficult to find and use of owners clubs will be essential.I would also consider using a back axle from another make such as Citroen/Peugeot maybe.

welcome to MHF's by the way.

Yes erneboy you are correct, that is why I said a complete change of back axle, not that bad a job really providing it fits.
On the original it has to be either broken gearing or broken half shaft.
One has to remember that these parts were made by an individual maker and supplied to the various makes.so it is possible to have one from that will fit, but could be a slightly different ratio. Strip down and count the teeth.:wink2::wink2:

Oh dear, one has to think positive erneboy. The manufacturer of the back axles and diffs have numbers on them same as other parts, one just has to match them up.Providing of course one can find one, which is why I have added a link to a Renault UK breakers. Some old back axles had the diffs as a separate part that could be removed and transferred,Like Land Rover, others were the complete unit, sealed into one unit.We have no info on this.

Yes rocking horse doodah is very rare indeed.:laugh: How ever we have also suggested the Renault traffic owners club.

Maybe Daffy could look through the adverts over there, with guidance from our other Brits abroad.:wink2:

I was thinking along the lies of possibly an older Peugeot 504 type of vehicle.or the 405. Back axles were not just made for Vans you know.:wink2::wink2:

I know - but have you considered gearing differences between cars like the 404 504 and a Trafic van EVEN if the axle might fit.

PS when did you last see a 404, 504 anywhere outside Africa?
Almost as rare as RWD Trafics:wink2:

Unless of course someone is still using one as a taxi somewhere on the South Coast:confused:

:laugh::laugh: funny enough my first cab was a Peugeot 504 estate. Best estate there ever was, except for maybe the 505 and the Citroen Safari. The BBC outside broadcasts used them when filming around the racecourses.

Anyway, if the Renault rear axle has a diff that can be taken out of the casing in situ, then one only has to find a similar workings to replace as against the whole back axle. Until the OP lets us know then we cannot be of much help.

You never know maybe a diff from a London cab might fit.
