Canít get reverse

Hi all
Van has sat for 7 months , fired up straight away , all was fine when parked up .
All gears can be selected and moves forward no problem
Canít select reverse gear ? Stick lifts up and across but donít quite go all the way .
Canít select reverse either when the engines not running

Any ideas on the cause ?

As you have neglected to gives us any clues as to which vehicle you are having trouble with you make it difficult to help you, but I would hazard a guess at a Fiat Ducato. If so, and it is 07 or later have a look at the base of the gear lever on the dash, it has 2 6mm bolts which I've known to come lose, allowing the lever to move but not the selector mechanism under the gaiter enough to go into reverse.

easy fix.

Long idle layups can bring problems like this and brakes. I'm surprised you can't select reverse with engine off. How about rocking the van and trying to select reverse still with engine off?

The FSA formerly SIB & PIA licensed a twice convicted fraudster to handle our lifeīs savings. Guess what? He robbed us of £750,000. So they changed their name again to the FCA.
Brexit is madness orchestrated by the insane.

Sometimes in the car I can't select reverse - until I change the position of the wheels (or something) by driving forward a little.

I am no mechanic and know virtually nothing about HOW a gearbox operates, but I believe it is a case of sliding cogs etc., along to line up with others for each gear (corrections readily accepted), so what you suggest could make sense to me as it would allow the cogs to change positions slightly to allow them to fit together.

That makes sense to me, reverse does not have synchromesh so the things must line up perfectly before they would fit together.

If that is also linked to things sticking due to months of inactivity that could be the reason. Perhaps a shortish drive to allow the engine and gearbox to warm through might help (as long as you do not need reverse to access the parking). Might be worth trying ?

Any typo that I make means the errorists win.

Any comments above are only MY OPINION and should be read as that.
