Clicking Relay

Hi,

Have searched this site and have a few idea's but no one seems to have had this problem.

We have a Fiat Swift, 1990 I believe and when I turn the lights on or if power demand is increased ie radio etc there is a clicking sound from the engine department. I have enough experience to say its a Relay clicking on and off and the glow plug light also illuminates. I am guessing this could be an earthing issue any thoughts ??

I will be getting dirty and getting under the van shortly to check the earthing strap, want to get to the bottom of it myself the van is going in shortly for a timing belt but can't rally afford the extra cost.

Cheers in advance

Phil

Earthing faults can show up with the oddest of symptoms

You need to also check the earth points under the dash i guess these will be on the pillars ?

Assuming you are talking about FIAT lights being turned on that starts this off (so engine battery ) not the internal swift camper lights ( leisure battery )

I remember when turning the ignition on my Hobby there was always a buzz then a click and has assumed it was something in the heater system under the dash.

Hi Ray

my sprinter sometimes emits a clicking wurring noise from under the dash when i first start it up and it can go on and off for a couple of minutes, i too understood that its the air ducting for the heater Windscreen demist etc

I just assumed that the OP had a fault (his glow plug light flashes ) when as you say it maybe perfectly normal

Could this be the indication that there is a faulty glowplug

Ok so some clarification is needed I think,

So I start her up with no problem at all and no clicking.

I increase the power demand to the engine battery by turning on the lights or the radio and wipers and then I get a constant clicking sound and the coil light flashes on and off.

I am confident that the clicking is the coil rely and it continues to click until the engine is turned off.

I am waiting for some fine weather and some time and I will be checking the earthing strap and I'll have a look for the other earthing points you mentioned Trek thank you.
