Water in Gear Box 2002 2.8JTD

Hi all, just noticed that there is a white milky substance running out of somewhere near the top of the gear box. So it looks like water has been getting in.
Any ideas where it is getting in ?
Guessing the bulkhead drains are blocked and the water is running onto the top of the box and getting in via the linkage ?

In the older Ducato's the drain pipe from the window scuttle drains via a rubber drain hose, under the bonnet right hand side, this drained directly over the gear box.
If so the pipe needs repositioning or extending away from the gearbox also the oil will need changing asap.

get the oil changed asap the gearbox is fragile anyway just refill the box 1/4 litre above what the handbook says so that the fifth gear is protected better ...if you look at the scuttle drain just extend it down past the gearbox

More to the point...tell us about your Griff :smile2:

Hi all, thanks for the replies. Not had a chance to reply, but i drained the box and it was full of water! Got some oil, but where on earth is the filler plug ??
Or is the plug where the water is getting in ?
The bulkhead drain tube is loose and it must have been dumping water stright on top of the switch on the top of the g box. I reckon cable ties will be enough to pull it back to over the right rear of the box.

And as for that Griff, where do i start ?? 🤔🤔

Hello

There is a breather on the top of the gearbox, you need to fill it through that using a long thin piece of hose with a funnel in the end, when you fill it use 2.7 litres, that was the last revised recommendation from fiat on quantity.

The breather just pulls up for the lid of it to come off, that's also where it gets in.

Not sure if they changed it when the updated the engine or not.

There is lots of info on that box and the weakness of the 5th. gear. It was recommended you overfill with fully synthetic gear oil.

Ray.

The 5th gear repair doesn't look to be that difficult if you're a bit handy
