Trip to Turkey

We have decided to drive to Turkey in September to visit my sister and hubby who live near Izmir.
Been checking info on the forum via posts from other intrepid motorhomers.
Like the route down to Athens via Ancona - Patras ferry (or via Igmounesta)
Then take route via Alexandriapolis bypass Istanbul down to Canakkale to Izmir.
However my sisters friend has advise us to go on the Pireas - Chios ferry run by Blue star Ferries.
Has anyone used this ? any pointers ? been quoted 339 Euros for a return crossing c/w cabin .
This is for a 7.5 motorhome plus 2 adults.
Saves you about 900 miles !! so for the sake of a little difference in cost re mileage/time versus ferry crossing.
Cheers

Not used this ferry but plenty of others in Greece, without MH.

There should be no problems with the Chios ferry - it has to run regularly to service what is quite a well-populated island.

You must also add the logistics/costs of the Chios-Turkey ferry. They can be expensive and on some routes the ferries are small and have limited space/height restrictions.

For Greek Ferries MHF Member 'peejay' has been a fund of info in the past, but he did not go to Greece this year so his info may be a bit dated.

For Turkey info, but not ferries - he always drove, try Don Madge. He winters near Fethiye.

The Greek ferries are cutting back on bigger vessels and frequency because of the general economic situation and the reduction in government subsidies. The ferry companies do not publish schedules far in advance. For Sept. I doubt whether you will get reliable info before Easter. Even when you have a booking keep checking with the ferry company website - do not rely on the agent.
Last minute checking is best done with the Port Police in the relevant port - arm yourself with a list of phone numbers before you travel.

If you have not already found it the Danae Travel website is good for all ferry companies and routes. Although they do have their own ferries the Travel side acts for all companies.

Trip to Turkey

We used the ferry from Cesme to Xios, then from Xios to Piraeus, in March 2012.

We have a 6m Hymer with bikes on the back, so 6.5m in all, the Cesme - Xios
ferry would only take one camper or a couple of cars.

It was expensive, but saved us a lot of driving . . . for details see our trip:

Xios is a lovely island, definitely worth spending a few days there.

Cheers!

I will be interested in knowing how you get on. My son wants to drive to Cyprus next year in June and I will have to make a decision before October as my insurance is due for renewal and does not cover Turkey.
