The Netherlands - a few observations if you are thinking of going

Having just got back I wanted to post a few thoughts which would have helped us out...

- Not many sites/supermarkets take UK credit cards so make sure to have plenty of cash with you.

- We didn't see one large UK/French style out of town supermarket. Indeed all the supermarkets we saw were in town and didn't take credit cards. Parking may well therefore be a problem so bets to plan meals/beer requirements, a few days ahead.

- Check the costs of campsites. We found them to generally be expensive plus many charge extra for water; showers; and have metered EHU!

- Everywhere we went everyone spoke excellent English. I had my phrasebook and a few learned phrases handy, which went down well but all the Dutch were very happy speaking English.

- Roads are generally very good and the Dutch drivers very law abiding.

A great country with very friendly people. We loved it.

Graham

Somehow I don't remember having any problems with Credit Cards Graham.
Yes the supermarkets except Ikea were somewhat smaller than UK and France.
I guess we probably paid a bit more as we were close to Amsterdam.

The site we stayed at in Amsterdam and the one in Mitwolda took cards but all the others didn't. Lidl in Amsterdam did but the Albert Heijn chain do not (the largest NL supermarket chain). A couple of other local (to the NLs) supermarkets I went in didn't take cards either...

We stayed on small sites, generally advertised as mini campings. They were lovely. Very friendly and not at all expensive.

A good tip!

We looked at some but at 8.7m long it was a struggle to get into them (plus only grass pitches in the ones I looked at)

Yes, Graham, I think all of them were grass only. Lots of tent camping too. I forget how much smaller we are in many ways with our PVC - though it's not tiny, by any means.
